4A South Metro football: Valor Christian topples Ponderosa in squeaker

Valor Christian moved to a 6-3 overall record, 4-0 in the South Metro League, after playing host to Ponderosa Oct. 29 at Valor Stadium in Highlands Ranch. The Eagles beat the Mustangs 20-17.

The Eagles’ George Talanoa scored on an 18-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Quarterback Brock Berglund also scored on a 67-yard touchdown run in the third, and Christian McCaffrey ran into the end zone on a 6-yard jaunt also in the third.

Berglund finished with 140 passing yards. McCaffrey rushed for 85 yards. Cole Anderson had 68 receiving yards, and Stephen Miller had 64. On defense, the Eagles’ Alex Gildon had 5.5 total tackles, 25 return yards and an interception. Max McCaffrey had 40 return yards and an interception. Sackett Keesen had an interception and a fumble recovery.

With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to a 6-3 overall record, 3-1 in the league.

Mustangs quarterback Taylor Johnson scored on a 94-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Kicker Nathan Ekhoff sailed a field goal onto the scoreboard from 49 yards out, and Tyler Sandt scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third.

Johnson finished with 92 passing yards and 111 yards rushing.
