Event welcomes new park

A 9.6-acre park in Lone Tree will be celebrated with a grand opening event May 9.

Prairie Sky Park sits next door to the Lone Tree Recreation Center, and will offer residents a multi-purpose playing field, a multi-purpose ball field, a basketball court and walking/jogging paths. Two playgrounds will host children from ages 5 to 12 years old.

According to Seth Hoffman, Lone Tree’s assistant city manager, a portion of the funding for Prairie Sky Park came from a grant through Great Outdoors Colorado in the amount of $200,000. The city received the maximum awarded amount in the Local Government Parks and Outdoor Recreation category.

“It was the first time the city applied for a GOCO grant,” Hoffman said.

Residents are invited to come out to the park for the grand opening for a picnic, kite flying, face painting, baseball games and music. Festivities include many free activities with numerous vendors in attendance. The Lone Tree Farmer’s Market will be onsite from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Colorado Ultimate Frisbee Association will conduct free coaching clinics and coordinate pick-up Frisbee games.

Ultimate Frisbee is basically a game of keep-away, with the goal of catching the disc in the other team’s end zone. The Ultimate Frisbee members at the grand opening are members of this volunteer-based organization.

Lone Tree schools will have fundraising activities to benefit the school children in the community.
