Aug. 20

Adult Literacy Volunteer Training Orientation is at 2 p.m. Aug. 20 at Parker Library. Help adults learn English, become better readers, or prepare for tests such as the GED, citizenship, or military entrance tests.

Aug. 21

Aug. 23 and 30

Douglas County Libraries is offering two new classes for small business people. In “How to Find and Target a Profitable Niche for your Services,” Jeanna Pool of Catalyst Creative will help you ensure that the niche you're targeting is the best one for you, your services and your personality. That class is at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at Parker Library. The strategic planning class at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Philip S. Miller Library can help business owners reconnect with what they love to do and also give them a plan for doing all that their business requires. Both classes are free but require registration. Aug. 24-25

AARP Drivers Safety at 1 p.m. Aug. 24-25 at Parker Library. For adults over 50. Registration is required for two-day class. This classroom course covers age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems, and license renewal requirements. Cost for AARP members is $12 with card; non-members’ cost is $14. Cash or check payable to AARP.

Aug. 28

Parker Library’s Live Local Music Series will kick off its fifth year at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 with an outdoor performance by The Outfit.

Oct. 2

The Douglas County Libraries Writers Conference is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at at Castle View High School, 5254 N. Meadows Drive, Castle Rock. New and experienced writers can enjoy a day of workshops and networking, and gain tips and insight from authors and publishing professionals. Tickets are on sale for $75, with an additional $25 for a private agent pitch session. Special pricing of $35 is available to young writers, ages 14-18. Lunch is included with all tickets.

Oct. 13

“A Day with Rick Bayless,” winner of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, visits Douglas County Libraries on Oct. 13. Bayless is an award-winning chef-restaurateur. His public television series, “Mexico: One Plate at a Time,” is in its seventh season, and his sixth cookbook, “Fiesta at Rick's: Fabulous Food for Great Times with Friends,” was released in July.
