Benn Farrell

Despite being 5 feet 5 inches tall, junior libero Peri Tehven is still effective.

In a position ideal for a team’s less-than-sizeable players, Tehven enjoys knowing she has an important role in volleyball. Tehven is a junior at Mountain Vista High School, which opened its Continental League competition Sept. 11 at home in Highlands Ranch against Ponderosa. The Golden Eagles beat the Mustangs 3-1.

Tehven has been in volleyball for about five years and loves being an anchor for the Vista backcourt.

“I like the fact that I can come into the game knowing that I can help,” Tehven said. “If someone’s doing bad, I have the chance to help make up for that. It’s just a good opportunity to bring the team back up.”

The junior said what is key to being good in her position is keeping her focus.

“Without the focus on the back row, everything just drops, and I can’t pick anything up,” Tehven said. “That’s what I need to concentrate on.”

Being three games into the season after Ponderosa, and carrying a 2-1 record overall before weekend tournament action, Mountain Vista is performing almost at the level it prefers.

“We have a just a little bit more tightening up [to do], but as far as it goes, I think we’re just about there,” Tehven said.

In their first league match-up of the season before facing Littleton on Sept. 16 on the road, Tehven said she was pleased to see how much energy her team had against the Mustangs.

“We were always up with each other, cheering each other on and just encouraging the entire match,” she said.

Of course, the season has still just begun and the Eagles know there’s still things to work on.

“We have to work on closing our block and being able to tighten up the net just a little bit more,” Tehven said.

Vista volleyball opened its season Aug. 28 against Arapahoe and beat the Warriors in five games. Senior outside hitter Ariel Turner had 35 attacks against Arapahoe, including 16 kills. Sarah Miller had 27 attacks herself. In addition to three aces, Tehven led in the opener in digs with 11.

The Golden Eagles followed with a 3-0 loss to Cherry Creek on Sept. 3 at home.
