A low-cost path to help
I agree with the recent article on alcoholism and drug use as an epidemic but wish to point out that there is an answer that does not cost big bucks. Alcoholics Anonymous has been that answer for hundreds of thousands of people since it started in 1935. AA is a spiritual program. A suffering individual attends a meeting and makes a donation to the group according to his or her means. Sounds simple. It is simple but it is not easy.
Like any recovery program or treatment center, the main ingredient to sobriety is the WILLINGNESS of the affected individual to want to quit and to seek help. What if they don’t? Then the family members are encouraged to look at Al-Anon, which uses the same 12 Steps and spiritual resources to help the families cope better. Whe one person changes, the other person needs to change.
Longtimers in AA recommend 90 meeting in 90 days. They also know that sobriety, emotional, physical and mental recovery can take a lifetime- one day at a time. And nothing can help those who really do not want to change. They turn into those statistics we read about.
Resources are as close as your phone or computer. AA. Al-Anon. The Orchard Club in Greenwood Village all have lists and times of meetings. Free for a small donation. You decide.
